In a press statement by his publicist, Mitch Ngaman, it was stated that Jim Iyke’s mother, “Mrs Ngozi Gladys Okelue Esomugha, was born on May 3, 1947, and succumbed to a long battle with illness.”

About the mother's death Iyke said: “She (her late mum) was a force of nature. My big sis, my 1st wife, my confidante, my rock, my critique, my greatest fan and regal leader.

“She was a radiant, gorgeous woman with a smile bigger than the sun and always ready to embrace anyone for all the good and even wrong reasons.

“My sun is gone. The dull numbing ache in my heart will never be pacified by any woman alive. Not my lover, sisters nor even a daughter I may one day bear.


“The relationship of a mother and an only son is uniquely eternal and spiritual, transcending human comprehension. Mine with Gladys is even far strangely beyond that.

“They say it’s a blessing if a son buries his mother and not the other way around. I'm not sure they’re entirely right.

“They also said one never recovers from the loss of their mother. I hope they are right! May I never recover from the memories of your celestial love, sacrifices, warmth, your contagious laughter and merciless wit.

ABORTION; FOETUS FOUND IN UNICAL FEMALE HOSTEL

A tragedy recently rocked the air waves in University of Calabar female hostel as a live human foetus, estimated to be about 7 months old was found in one of the bathrooms in Hall 8. 

The students gathered at alarm raised by one of the female students who went to have her bath. The male and female students around the Hall went to answer the alarm when they were shocked at the terrible sight.

In a chat with our reporter, Mercy Mbakwu who is the Vice President of Students Union Government in Unical described the show as a surprise. She noted that she will engage in a task with her team to bring the culprit to book.

One of the porters who was on duty that day, who pleaded anonymity because she was not authorised to speak on the matter confirmed the incident.

The Chairperson of Hall 8 Mercy Akeng recalled that the same incident was reported to have occurred in same Hall last year and wondered why the culprit was left unidentified. “This time we will not let the person go free’’ she said.

While many students told our reporter that the incident was ungodly, some saw it as a precaution taken routinely by female students, to avoid unwanted pregnancy.

Dandy Azu and Ogar Monday told our reporter that the culprit should not be blamed. They said: “we see it as the only means they used to avoid giving birth to a bastard.

The foetus was buried thereafter, by a group of Man O War Corps led by the Vice President and the Man O’ War in hall 8.

Blind Student Sues University for Introducing Technology

A federal lawsuit  filed by a blind Miami University student accuses the university of using technology that presents a barrier to her education.

Junior Aleeha Dudley, of New Paris, says course materials are inaccessible to her text-to-speech software and she hasn't received material in Braille or other tactile forms she can use without help to offset her lack of sight.

The lawsuit, filed last week, says Miami failed to provide equal access in violation of federal law.

Dudley, who wants to go veterinary school, said her hopes of being admitted to a graduate program have been "jeopardized, if not destroyed," because of lackluster grades she blames on barriers to completing coursework.

She compared the school's conduct to a public place with unneeded entrance steps and no ramp.

Dudley also said touch screen systems used at the southwest Ohio university prevent her from ordering food or even doing laundry without help.

The university denied Dudley's allegations, spokeswoman Claire Wagner said in a statement.

According to the Dayton Daily News, Dudley wants Miami to expunge her grades, pay her tuition and costs to repeat three academic years, pay her legal fees, pay other damages and provide relief determined by the court.

The lawsuit also seeks an injunction ordering Miami to stop violating disability laws.

"I am frustrated," Dudley said. "But the biggest of my goals is that I really want to help somebody who comes behind me as a blind student pursuing science. Maybe not only at Miami, but at other universities so that they don't have these same frustrations, and they're not nearly as exhausted and frustrated as I am about this."

Boko Haram's Letter to Nigeria

This is the full text of the latest message from the Boko Haram leader, ABUBAKAR SHEKAU. The transcribed
message, which was delivered in Hausa and in Kanuri, reads as follows:
“Of course there is no doubt about it; we carried out the attacks in Maiduguri and we were responsible for the
other attacks being carried out all over. But the Giwa Barracks attack is something worth telling, because
Allah has helped us to kill his enemies in Giwa Barracks. We launched the Maiduguri attacks and killed infidels
in Giwa Barracks.

But specifically, I will devote half of my speech to the issue of Civilian JTF. Your name is not Civilian JTF but
Civilian Trouble. My advice to you so-called Civilian-JTF is to flee, take up arms, get conscripted into the
army or police, because I am telling you is that I have started a war against you. The war against you has

In this world, there are two kinds of people; there are those who are with us or those who are against us, and

'Nigerian Youths Should Unite'- Ogar

Ogar Emmanuel Oko, a 500 level student of Electronics and Computer Technology (ECT) UNICAL. He is the
leader and coordinator of the Youth Alliance for Northern Cross River Dreams (YANCRID); one of the most
vibrant youth forum in Cross River State. In this interview, he tells Sam Ibok a 400 level Curriculum and Teaching about
the objectives of the forum and the Challenges facing Nigerian Youths.

Q: Can I meet you Sir?
ANS: I am Comr. Ogar Emmanuel Oko, aka (BABA 50); I’m an indigene of Yala Local Government Area of Cross
River State, by the grace of God, A final year student of Electronics and Computer Technology from the
University of Calabar. I am the former President Echo Press Organization and the Emeritus National President of
the Nigerian Union of Campus Journalist. I have held various offices such as the News Editor, Deputy Editor-
in-Chief and the Editor in Chief of NUCJ. Currently, I am the leader of the Youths Alliance for Northern Cross
River Dream (YANCRID).
Q: What is the Youths Alliance for Northern Cross River Dreams, all about?
ANS: The fundamental objectives and directive principles of the alliance include but not limited to:
i. Creating a platform(s) for the discuss of issues affecting the youths
ii. Preparing the youths for the political, economic, and social ideological actualization for the peoples of
northern Cross River State
iii. Nurturing and shaping the youths to be able to condemn and oppose all forms of discrimination, exploitation
injustice, and particularly, political victimization and degradation of human beings.
What do you think are the challenges facing Nigerian youths?
Hmm! A typical Nigerian youth is crippled with the manacle of political segregation and economic inequality.
This is intrinsically due to political affinity and religion affiliation. However, I wouldn’t want to say poverty,
because poverty is of the individual mindset. Not lack of education, because many graduates are loitering the
streets without job. An average Nigerian youth is not given equal opportunities like his counterpart in other
land and climes. I think unemployment wrap it all.
Q: What are the solutions to these challenges?
ANS: First, the youths must see themselves as one irrespective of ethnicity, political tiers or religion belief.
Secondly, the youths should co-join forces together and elect youth as president, governors, and senators and
even local government chairman. Finally, the youths should be empowered by acquiring skills through
entrepreneurship development programme.
How true is the saying, youths are the leaders of tomorrow?
There is no iota of truth in that saying. This is an age-long deceitful saying used by the elites to hypnotize the
youths into hoping in futility. Since as a child, I have being hearing that saying even till now, but shamefully
enough, I have not seen youth leading in any renown capacity.
Q: What is behind your leadership drives?
ANS: The passion to serve that evolves from the melody of a freedom of a librated mind. It means the joy that
comes when changes are effected.
What are your score cards since assumption as the coordinator?
Under my superintendent, most youths are beginning to appreciate a new level of thinking, new attitudinal and
behavioral change. During the previous local government area elections, we organized a sensitization campaign
aimed at educating the youths on electoral education. We are enlightening the youths against child
prostitution; modern slaving (child labour), restiveness and other anti-social activities such as cultism and drug
abuse. With this, the mind is reviewed and renewed for a new level of thinking and mental emancipation.
Q: How will you address the security situation in Nigeria especially the menace of Boko Haram insurgency?
ANS: Since these people are Islamic extremists, with ultra-vires mindset, it means that the battle of this
warfare is less political and more of religion. Karl Marx says that religion is the opinion of the people. However,
section 4, sub (1) (c) of the Youths Alliance stipulates that YANCRID shall maintain absolute neutrality on
partisan issues that anchor on religion; faith and belief. Therefore, I cannot delve into it. Hence, the Federal
Government should use religion force in tackling the menace rather than engaging them with military forces
that seemed overwhelmed by the insurgent’s tactics.
Q: What is your advice to the youth?
ANS: We should return to our creator and seek the knowledge of our being in existence. By so doing, we shall
realize that we are meant to be the head and the tail. To rule and not to be used by some politicians as thugs
and ballot box snatchers. The youths should equip themselves with entrepreneurship skills.

Bowen University Shut Down!

Authorities of the Bowen University, Iwo, yesterday shut down the institution and ordered the students
to vacate the campus immediately following a student disturbance on Wednesday over alleged
incessant power outage and epileptic water supply.
The students protested poor power supply to the hostels and insufficient water service.
The protest, however, turned violent with reports of damage to school property and looting of some
traders’ shops and facilities, forcing the authorities to invite the police that eventually quelled the riot.
Ten of the rioters were arrested by the police for alleged looting.

But, the Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Matthew Ojo, in an interview with Daily Sun , gave a
different twist to the story.
He said the immediate cause of the demonstration was the disruption of the viewing of a
European League match on TV by some of the students in one of the male hostels, due to an electrical
fault on Wednesday night.
This reportedly angered the spectators, who trooped out and started demonstrating.
The Vice Chancellor denied that there was ever inadequate power supply on campus, disclosing that
the management provide at least 13-hours supply on standby generator on daily basis.
Justifying the closure of the school and a 10-day forced break for the students, Prof Ojo said this
became imperative due to their recalcitrant attitude to allow peace and order to reign.
“They are pressing for the release of their colleagues who were arrested by the police for breaking into
other people’s shops and looting under the guise of the riot a condition to stop fomenting trouble.
“As management, we have undertaken to go and bail them, but, this is a criminal matter that the police
have a right to handle their own way and there can’t be dictating to law enforcement agency. So, we
have asked them to go home for a 10 day-break and come back,” he said.
The Baptist-owned university resumed session barely three and half weeks ago. Semester examinations
are not however, due until May 29, it was learnt.

I was made aware of it. I don’t remember the movie. I also don’t remember sucking Biola’s breasts. If the
movie exists, that scene never took place.

The film is ‘Pregnant Hawkers’ and were you and Biola Ige involved in any sensual scene where you were both
nude, making love, real and unreal?
Like I told you, I don’t recall the movie. I do a lot of movies and I can’t remember what happens in all of
them. The fact that I don’t recall means that the movie was shot a long time ago. Probably three or more
years back. when love scene was in vogue with producers. I’m still searching for the movie to acquaint
myself with the story.
There has never been anything between myself and any actress that I’ve made a movie with. My romantic
relationships have always been outside the movie industry. I don’t take my work home.
But you seem to have the knack for romantic scenes. Why?
Love making scenes are normal in movies. When we see them in foreign movies it’s nothing. But when it’s
done here, people start questioning actors morality. Bear in mind that these scenes are not shot the way it’s
finally seen when the movie comes out. Nothing ever actually happens. Not with about ten people in the
production crew in the room with you.
I want to add that the aim in making movies is to enlighten people. You want them to see exactly what’s
happening in the world around them. You want them shocked into action against whatever it is you’re trying
to portray. Avoiding to touch, the sensibilities of people only result in those things you want seen and treated,
ignored. In that regard, I try to make my acting as real as possible without actually doing something wrong.
How do you feel being labelled a porn star, because some people feel that is what you are actually becoming
in the industry
I’m not a porn star and I never will be. Love making scenes are sometimes inclusive in a movie and should be
done with class. Sometimes editors and directors don’t edit or direct well and it comes out wrong. Will you
call any of the American or British movie stars a porn star?
As a top brand in Nollywood and as a sex symbol: how do you handle advances from women?
I avoid them. And please, I’m not a sex symbol. I’ve done two hundred movies, out of which only about ten of
them have anything concerning sex. Why are people concentrating on those? An actor, before he can be
acknowledged as one, has to play quite a number of roles in his career.

'Dont rush into marriage'-Lady D

What's been happening for 35 years?
Sometimes, I wonder if it is really up to 35 years. Maybe it’s because one is just enjoying the ride. When you
are comfortable and you do the things you like to do and you are around people that you enjoy, you wouldn’t
just realize when time is going by. But it is going by because I see my children in college graduating with first
degrees, definitely something is changing around me. It is a long journey and we have had ups and downs
within the 36 years that we have been together. But we are happy together. A lot of couples haven’t got that
far-we are really privileged.

What I enjoyed most in marriage
Companionship. Like I said, all couples have their ups and downs but we have been able to sort things out by ourselves. Also, we communicate a lot. Talking is a key thing in any relationship and we always point this out anytime we are interviewed. Honesty and agreement are also important. We strive to make things good for ourselves and our extended family including our children and parents. We look beyond just ourselves.

Hard part of it
I guess it is just the small things that every couple experiences in a relationship. It may be disagreement in
raising the kids among others. I also have step children to look after. The bottom-line is the resolve by both
of us to make the relationship work.

My home
I have seven kids altogether out of which three are mine biologically, the rest are step children. We are all
very close. We reprimand those who are not doing well and commend those who are doing well. We try and
work with them and they know they have our love as parents. They don’t really look at me as their step mum
and that is how I have always wanted it to be. They all call me by my first name.
I hate it when they use the appellation ‘Ma’ for me. It hurts me. One of my step children came to Nigeria
some years back and when he saw me he was overwhelmed. He never knew that a step mother could have
such a positive influence on one’s life.

Coming to live in Nigeria
With regards to coming to Nigeria, I don’t think I would have changed anything. But I think if someone had
told me that I would come and live in Nigeria and have kids here, I would have told whoever the person is
that it was not possible. The first time I came to Nigeria, I wanted to stay for three months but I ended up
staying for nine months. So, it’s not about the country but the person who brought me to Nigeria. I don’t
want to brag but I am grateful to God for my relationship.

How I got hooked
From the beginning, meeting Charles was different because he was a Nigerian. I have never really gone out
with a Nigerian. I have a lot of American boyfriends but not a Nigerian. I really wanted to know much about a Nigerian man and his culture and people. That was what really intrigued me.

Coping at the home front
He takes care of his family very well. If he had not proven to be a family man, I probably would not have
been in Nigeria in the first place. He has been a good husband and father to his children.

Advice for young couples
I think they have to first get it right from the start. I think dating is very important. You need to know what
you want to get yourself into. For women, it is not because the clock is ticking and for men, it is not about
what you have. But you need to know the person you want to spend your life with before you commit
yourself. We make mistakes but people have to be careful. One of the things that work for me and my
husband is that he is not a typically and culturally Nigerian man, maybe it is because of his exposure.
