Since 18 December, 2013, the Academic Staff of Collages of Education has been on strike. The labour strike has attracted a lot of sympathy from concerned bodies including the Federal Government, headed by Dr. Goodluck Jonathan,
The Union said the strike was staunchly aimed at re-branding the perceived ugly looks of the collages of Education in Nigeria.
The Union also held that there are grounds which they would want cleared if they must take back tools to work.
According to Premium Times, the critical areas as demanded by the union to the federal government are
- Provision of funds to arrest the infrastructural decay in the colleges of education.
- Migration of lower cadre of both academic and none academic staff.
- Autonomous degree awarding status.
- Harmonization of conditions of service of tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
- Forceful implementation of integrated personal information payroll system.
- Review of extant laws establishing colleges of education in Nigeria.
- Government should stop the outsourcing of critical services in the colleges, such as security.
- Funding of accreditation activities.
- Funding of sabbatical leave.
- Release of the white paper of the 2012 visitation panel report.
- Full implementation of the 65years retirement age as provided by the act.
- Release of the scheme of service by the office of the secretary to the government of the federation.
