The Chairman of the Calabar University Electoral Committee (CUECO) Dr. Idaka Idaka has reiterated that the committee does not rig the SUG election. Dr. Idaka made the remark in a chat with Campuslight crew who visited him recently.
The CUECO is mandated by section 50 of the SUG Constution to organize the SUG elections and present the winners for inauguration to the Vice Chancellor. Dr. Idaka a two-time Chairman of the Committee said the task of conducting the SUG election is an enormous one. “Coupled with the stress and the task of organizing an election for such large students’ community, you will realize that people will always talk. When you try to be principled and disciplined, people will always fault you. But I am not disturbed because I know that I am doing the right thing.
“When I was appointed as the Chairman, I met my two bosses-the Vice Chancellor and the Dean of Students Affairs. I asked them what my terms of reference were and they told me they want a free and fair election. Good! I worked with that. We don’t rig election. I wasn’t looking to the right or left. We made sure elections were conducted and results announced the same day before night falls. That is what we all want. I appreciate the support of the Vice Chancellor and I really thank him for he is a good leader.
“After the election, delegates came from CRUTECH and other campuses asking us how we were able to hold the election without crisis or fights and shootings. That was great! It showed we did what was admirable.
As for the next SUG election, I am not sure if I will appointed to Chair the committee but lets keepour fingers crossed. I will advice the next chairman to learn from our mistakes and perform better”, he concluded.
