Letter writing is an act of communication. In most establishments, letter writing exercise, especially, ‘Application Letters’ are used by most CEOs to do entrance Tests for their applicants for employment.

This is because letter writing pulls the in-gene of personal expression in you. It causes you to do some more in writing, thinking, articulation and composition; it also tows out your initiative a great deal. For those that are writers, one common thing is that if you go through your work 100 times, you will do 100 corrections.

Letter writing used to be the sole communication link between us, those days when we were in school, and our parents who were at home; talking about the Pre-GSM era.

Those days, a day hardly passed without we, pupils (later students), boys or girls, scripting out some sheets for those boys and girls in the class. We wrote and sent out so called ‘love letters’ under the tables, desks; through the window blinks, frames and side pockets. In more comic ways, the ‘love letters’ will be dropped for the anticipated recipient in a place they use often maybe, in their school bags, lockers, stocking’s folds etc. These were fun and fantastic.

If we must be truthful to ourselves, ‘love letter’ writing was a taboo, but then, it contributed so much in building the literal skills of many young boys and girls of our time. Our teachers, in Sunday school, assembly halls, CRK (as it was called then) class would always feed our ears with their well brewed sentiments against ‘love letter’ writing. During the POP of the Batch C NYSC members, the scheme gathered that more than 90% of Nigerian graduates have very poor skills of letter writing. Do we really say it is just in letter writing? No. They have poor writing skills, not just in letter writing but in written expression.

Who has the blame? The Government says it is ASUU for churning out such half-baked products for service in the labour force; ASUU throws it back to the government claiming poor funding is the cause. Does funding affect knowledge? Well, your guess is as good as mine.

But one thing is that University education does not give room for word-to-word skill and tutorial in letter writing. When I was in college, there was no course like “Introduction to Letter Writing”; we had “Use of English” which rather scans over letter writing and never did an in dept study on it. But, I can remember vividly that ‘letter writing’ was contained in my ‘Use of English’ Text book, yet none of the three lecturers assigned for that course did talk about it. Perhaps they believed I should have known how to write letters.

That is by the way.

‘Love Letter’ writing is fast retreating. Its place has been hugely taken over by technological inventions, chief of which is SMS. Also, ‘Love letter’ writing has been swept off by social hubs and networks.

If you want to have a chat with your lover, you have very little to do. Just pull you laptop or Ipad close, key in your username and password. Are they online? If no, don’t worry. Pick up your phone do them a flash. Did they call back? If no, now, send a ‘Call Me SMS’; I think your service provider will help you do an SMS. You don’t need to worry about what grammar to use; they will send the message to your lover.

Didn’t they call back? Ok. Don’t worry. Pick up your phone, scroll to the SMS Icon; click on it then write: “Swt hrt pls login on FB”. Did you get the message? It simply means: “Sweet Heart, Please login on Face Book.

This is one of the many million SMS scripts that fly the GSM waves each day. It is grooved with lots of uncensored, ungrammatical tenses. Those good old days, a word or phrase of such like attracts swollen buttocks from the Head Master or Mistress as were then called. Nevertheless, you couldn’t do a letter without letting your close friend reread it for you, check for corrections etc. You wouldn’t want to be turned to a laughing stock after making such bold steps to write a ‘love letter’, so you would want to use most correct tenses, artistic hand writings to get your lover tripping.

Social life these days are a deviation from what ‘social’ means in terms. This era is replete with short ways of making friends, dating, chyking, chatting and socializing. These short cuts fall as fancies to our youths who care less about the moral lessons attached with social life.

In this era, youths and youngsters are imbued with the clue of a ‘world without stress’. A world which its flavours are sipped from the antennae sling of a rose flower; you may not necessary make some hard cuts before taking a sip.

What a life! This is exactly the consequence of technological social platforms known as social media. Imagine a boy or a girl born into this time and age. Poetries have been dapped away by soft peddling toys that sing poems. Some play the tunes without lyrics while others sing the whole. Does the child know what it is that the small red toy is playing? No. He nods his head at each tune. He cries when the toy is snatched away. ‘’Mummy, mummy” he calls. His books are far beneath the cushions.

Where are the chalks, plates, pencils? Where are the Macmillan’s sensible folk tale novels? Where are the play books and novels featuring our so much admired characters like Eze, Okon, Ada, Ali and Simbi. Haven’t they all been retreated? We recited their quotes, told their stories in our silent moments, drew their images on our palms and at the back of our 20 leaves Exercise books.

Imagine a child born into the fast streaming features of these technological confusions? What else could he learn other than the short hand, abridged, doctored and pseudo writing language like, “pls, lol, IJN, k, HBD, Tnks, hw, ” etc?

That is the problem we are passing through. NYSC may have made a wise observation yet it is not even the fault of ASUU as some claimed neither is it that of the government. It is the responsibility of a world of men with knowledge about child training and development. Suffice it to borrow one of Solomon’s wise droppings: ‘train up a child the way he should go so that when he is old, he may not depart from it”. That is the fact.

Let us go back to the days of ‘Love Letters’. To the days when the young child had value for what he writes, reads and says. It has so much good fixes in the moral life of the child than we ever thought. let us take our children back to use of papers and pencils rather than memory card, video games and cool snaps. It is about time. We have to show the love by giving our children the best they need rather than letting them chew what they see in the society.

“Give”, “seed”, “tithe”, “offering” and like words are synonymous with the Christian faith. Each time any or some of these expressions are made in the church, worshipers are expected to deep their hands in the purse, pull out some money to give into the church’s money box. But the recent ill practices in most ecclesiastical have become nothing but stealing and exploitation in Jesus’ Name, (did I hear you add Amen?).

‘Giving’ is a principle obtainable in every part of the world, in history and in our contemporary society. It goes beyond the bounds of religion and culture. The art and character of giving has no strong attachment to any constellation. Everybody gives. You give; I give.

However giving is understood by any tribe or tongue, Christian giving is different. Its act, practice and protocols are definitely defined by the Holy Bible. It has a natural reminiscence of ‘sowing and reaping’. He who sows shall reap “good measure, pressing down, shaking together and running over...

In practical Christian giving, few seeds are sacrificed into the soil, while plenteously abundant quantity is explored during harvest. That is how God has designed it that he who has the attitude of giving will receive boundless measures just as he gives. This is because giving is sacrificial and it transcends from the heart of the giver.
Nowadays, it is unfortunate that most churches explore the ‘sowing and reaping’ practice of the Christian faith to rob their worshipers. They compel their worshipers to give to the church and always promise a ‘harvest time’ which never comes.

They take giving as the primary responsibility of every Christian. This is false Christianity! It is an apostasy. The perpetrators of these acts are ‘’thieves in sheep clothing’’. They exploit the humble and non-violent nature of Christian religion to hypnotize the unsuspecting worshipers and rob them of their resources.

I am a non-religious entity. I have no strong attachment with any religion or church or sect. I believe in God Almighty who created you and I and whose Royalty we must serve our submission. Of all, I believe in the principle of giving.

Let us consider this: the Government collects taxes from its citizens. The churches collect tithes and offerings. The government uses the tax to provide social amenities for the citizens, free of charge. The churches use theirs to build Christian Hospitals, Christian Schools and all other stuffs in the “Christian” something category.
The church leaders tell us that these amenities are built to serve the interest of the church members but what do we see today?

Nigerian churches have the most expensive schools in Sub-Saharan Africa. The pupils and students live in luxury; they are been treated like lilies. The school fees are exorbitant.

Most of the church members whose tithes and offerings were used to build these schools do not have as much as it takes to send their wards to these schools, rather politicians, business big-wigs and so called ‘’worldly’’ cash-bags send their children their because they can afford the bills . The members have no benefits.

The proceeds from the school fees are been usurped by the GO (General Overseer) or GS (General Superintendent) of the church without accountability. The members can go to hell! Or rather they should pray hard and be “holy for your father in heaven is holy”.

It was Christian missionaries that introduced western education in Africa. The likes of John Wesley who were early missionaries in Africa came with the Gospel on one hand and education on the other hand. Believers of those days were given privilege to send their children to Methodist school, Catholic schools, Presbyterian collages. The only condition was to be affiliated with the church. With the privilege, collage kids and students were on scholarship in those missionary schools.

But today, our church leaders establish “Christian schools” to exploit the members of the church, build estates for themselves and dwell in opulence.

The church leaders go for your pockets. When you do not have what they want (money), be sure nothing goes to you. The amount of money in your pocket will determine the quantum of prayer you receive, the duration of the prayer, the grammar the pastor will use and the vocal tone too.

They deceive us. They only gather you on Sunday and worship days to trap the little cash from your pocket and leave you the rest of the days to repose on your own volition. They care less for your welfare and care more for your money.

The highest level of injustice is found in churches. Church leaders are not answerable to any of their members. They take decisions at will. The sins of members are judged by the Pastors and leaders; as for the sins of the Pastors and leaders, they believe that “God will judge”. This has led to reckless judgements, witch-hunting of members by leaders; impunity is not a new character among the leaders.

These can easily be traced to deviation of interest, quest for worldly riches by church owners and obvious “love for money” which creep. No wonder the bible says that “the love of money is the root of all evil which while some have coveted after they have erred from the faith... 1Timothy 6 vs 10-KJV

If church owners GOs and GSs or whatever they choose to bear do not come back to the track and line of Christianity, as defined by Christ, they will alight on hot coals.

Churches should engage in soul winning businesses. They should be moral theatres for the world which we live in. But it is unfortunate that most (if not all) of them have turned to ‘Kingdom of Heaven Industries’.

Christ fed 5000 people without collecting offerings. He could have collected monies from them and they would have paid willingly. He took 5 loaves of bread and 2 fishes from a boy to feed the 5000 people who he preached to. At the end of the day, the boy that gave the bread and fish went home with 12 baskets full of the fabrics of such like. That was a perfect example of sowing and reaping.

Churches should be communal in structure and administration.  They should be social cum welfare organization. In Acts, we were told that the early church “had all things in common”. That was a perfect communal organizational structure which should be a blueprint for Churches today.

Church administration should be in the best interests of their members. Church leaders should fashion modalities to impress development of their members. They should encourage youth development by mapping out strategies to develop the human productive capacities of their youths. They should award scholarships to their youths. They should make donations to the widows in the church and the less privileged. They should show love to the children and women who are impoverished by economic harshness rather than building castles for themselves on earth. Remember, King Solomon summed it up by saying that “...all is vanity”.

Since 18 December, 2013, the Academic Staff of Collages of Education has been on strike. The labour strike has attracted a lot of sympathy from concerned bodies including the Federal Government, headed by Dr. Goodluck Jonathan,

The Union said the strike was staunchly aimed at re-branding the perceived ugly looks of the collages of Education in Nigeria.

The Union also held that there are grounds which they would want cleared if they must take back tools to work.
According to Premium Times, the critical areas as demanded by the union to the federal government are

  1. Provision of funds to arrest the infrastructural decay in the colleges of education.
  2. Migration of lower cadre of both academic and none academic staff.
  3. Autonomous degree awarding status.
  4. Harmonization of conditions of service of tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
  5. Forceful implementation of integrated personal information payroll system.
  6. Review of extant laws establishing colleges of education in Nigeria.
  7. Government should stop the outsourcing of critical services in the colleges, such as security.
  8. Funding of accreditation activities.
  9. Funding of sabbatical leave.
  10. Release of the white paper of the 2012 visitation panel report.
  11. Full implementation of the 65years retirement age as provided by the act.
  12. Release of the scheme of service by the office of the secretary to the government of the federation.

The Vertican City has again been faulted for blasphemy and religious fallacy in a recent speech which one of its patrons inferred that Christ was drunk when he made a promise of His Second coming.

The spokesperson for the Vatican officially announced some days ago that the second coming of Jesus, the only son of the God, may not happen now after all, but urged followers to still continue with their faith, regardless of the news.

In a report by olodonation.com, Cardinal Giorgio Salvadore told WWN that this years 1,981st anniversary is to be the Vatican’s last in regards to waiting for the Lord to return to Earth.
“We just feel Jesus is not coming back by the looks of it.” he said. “It’s been ages like. He’s probably flat out doing other really good things for people somewhere else.”
Nearly two thousand years ago, Jesus promised his disciples that he would come again in chapter John 14:1-3 of the bible: “There are many homes up where my Father lives, and I am going to prepare them for your coming. When everything is ready, then I will come and get you, so that you can always be with Me where I am. If this weren’t so, I would tell you plainly”

The Vatican defended Jesus’ broken promise, claiming “he was probably drinking wine” at the time when he made the comments.

“Having the ability to turn water into wine had its ups and its downs.” added Cardinal Salvadore. “We all make promises we can’t keep when we’re drunk. Jesus was no different.”The church said it will now focus attentions on rebuilding its reputation around the world, but will keep an optimistic mind for the savior’s second coming.
About 96 percent of University of Wisconsin students who voted in an online referendum April 15-16 showed strong support for a Responsible Action Policy, validating the administration’s view that such a policy would be a positive step for the students and the university, notes Larry Ringgenberg, director of University Centers.

The new policy would protect students from being charged for under-age drinking if they call campus police for help when they or another student are dangerously intoxicated. A total of 2,831 students voted in favour of the policy and 119 voted against it. Campus police will be working with the chancellor to implement the policy.

UW student Devin Remiker, director of local affairs with the Student Association, was pleased that the vast majority of students supported the policy.

“If students ever end up in a bad situation, I don’t want them to have to make the decision about whether they should call or not,” says Remiker. “Saving a life is more important than any number of citations. If this ever saves just one person, I will be very happy.”

The policy idea has come up a number of times over the years, but the challenge was finding a way to implement it without undercutting university police ability to enforce laws, says UW-L Chancellor Joe Gow.
The authorities of Deeper Life Bible Church has discounted a recent media report which reported that the General Superintendent of the Church, Pastor William Kumuyi was hospitalized.

In a statement signed by Pastor Jerry Asemota Church Secretary, Deeper Christian Life Ministry, Lagos, the media report was described as fallacious adding that it was not in line with any shade of truth.

The statement noted that “the General Superintendent had preached the first message of the retreat on Thursday evening, and followed it up with all his three preaching assignments on Friday. By that evening he had lost his voice, thus prompting a brief announcement by the Church Secretary that the leaders had appealed to the GS to take a short break from preaching that Saturday.

It continued: “The Deeper Christian Life Ministry wishes to assure our members and the general public worldwide that there was no truth in the story peddled by the online newspaper. It should, therefore, be discountenanced in its entirety.

A police sergeant has raped a 13-year old girl at Ukpor in Anambra State.

The girl, who is the daughter of a popular pastor, has become pregnant.
She alleged that the policeman threatened to kill her if she told anyone.
But later told her mum when was experiencing ‘’stomach upset.’’
The man initially denied that he was responsible for her condition.
It was learnt the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Ukpor Ndidiamaka
Oguamalam has transferred the case to the Criminal Investigation Department
(CID) at Awka.

Sources said the parents petitioned the human rights group and the
commissioner of Police.

They said the policeman later accepted to pay the family N20,000 monthly.
But the father demanded N300,000.
The policeman was said to have raped the girl at gun point on her way from
school, but he claimed she gave her consent.

Police spokesman Emeka Chukwuemeka confirmed the incident.
‘’The matter is under investigation and I will brief you later’’, he said.
Speaking to reporters earlier, Chukwuemeka said police have recovered more
arms and ammunition from the arms dealer, Mr Alphonsus Ngwu.
He listed the items as 241 rounds of G3/Lar; 20 rounds of K-2 ammunition; 50
rounds of AK47 ammunition and three Pump Action guns.

The police also impounded some vehicles flouting the order by the Inspector-
General of Police Mohammed Abubakar on the abuse of siren.
Abubakar had directed the Deputy Inspector-General of Police of E Department
Jonathan Johnson at Governor Willie Obiano’s first security summit to monitor
the use of siren by top officials in the state.

Johnson relocated to the state and set up a special team.
The inspector-general had warned that he would impound vehicles flouting the
rules guiding use of sirens by unauthorised persons.
Chukwuemeka confirmed that many vehicles were impounded.

Behold the suicide bomber who rocked the airwaves few days back. He killed over 100 people when he blew himself up around 6:45am at Nyanya motor park when people were scrambling for buses to get to their various destinations
Posted by Given Atteh this picture, attracted a stream of comments about the development.

From the picture, this terrorist was dressed with a police uniform. Did you see that? He could have dressed as a high-rank force man, with a band of force designs on him as a disguise to quench possible accosts by security agents.

He, like his hundreds of victims were roasted by the bomb blast. The perculiarity with his case was that (his left stomach) the part of his body with which he carried the bomb was battered and his intestines were almost falling-off. Can you see it?

Recent report has revealed that the Malaysia Airlines plane flying from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 239 people on board is safe in the arms of some international captors. The flight has been missing since March 8.

According to one of the Russian newspapers, all the passengers are alive, they have been divided into seven groups and are living in mud huts with almost no food.
The doubtful report added that 20 passengers who were Asian “specialists” have been smuggled into a bunker in Pakistan.
As the search for the plane's wreckage is going on for more than a month, recent “pings” detected by Australian and Chinese searchers in the southern Indian Ocean have been the best lead so far.
Black boxes’ batteries typically runs down a month after an accident.
The disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 has sparked one of aviation's biggest mysteries.
The search has shifted from waters of Vietnam, to the Strait of Malacca and then to waters in the southern Indian Ocean as data from radar and satellites was further analysed.

Prof. Akin Oyebode yesterday caused a stir at the National Conference when he
proposed that Nigeria should change its name to United States of Songhai
(USS). The professor, who is representing Ekiti State in the Conference, said that
Nigeria should be changed to United States of Songhai just like Kwame Nkruma
changed the former Gold Coast to Ghana.

He said that it was obvious that
Nigeria as the name of the country has outlived its usefulness. He said, “I
propose that we change the name of Nigeria to United States of Songhai just like
Nkruma changed Gold Coast to Ghana,” adding that the country is operating
caricature federation. Oyebode noted that the Deputy Senate President, Ike
Ekweremadu, aptly said the country is running ‘feeding bottle’ federalism.

The conference, he added, should consider the issue of fiscal federalism, true
federalism, resource control or self determination. Ralph Osanaiye, a retired
Assistant Inspector General of Police, said that problem of the country started
when some leaders decided to run down security agencies by starving them of
funds and denying them arms and ammunitions.

He said that the policy to run down security agencies was deliberate in order to weaken them and incapacitate
them from carrying out their primary responsibilities. Michael Olukoya, president
of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), traced the challenges facing the country
to faulty foundation, saying primary schools have been systematically destroyed
by people who benefited from public school system. The NUT boss, who
represents the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in the Conference, said that in
Benue State teachers had been on strike for over six months without anybody
talking.

Soon, smoking in public places in Nigeria shall attract six months jail term. This is one of the fall outs of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting on Wednesday. The FEC approved the new National Tobacco Control Bill 2014, which among others, prescribes six months jail term for smoking in non-designated places.

The Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, made the disclosure while briefing newsmen on the outcome of the FEC meeting presided over by President Goodluck Jonathan at the State House.

Chukwu said that the Bill, which would be sent to the National Assembly for passage into law, prescribed stiff penalties for individuals and companies that violate tobacco control regulations.

He added that the Bill, drafted by the ministry in collaboration with other relevant stakeholders, “is specifically to control the dangerous effects of tobacco and to forestall tobacco manufacturers from turning the country to a dumping ground.’’

“The major ingredients of this Bill is that there are stiff penalties for people and individuals who fall foul of what will eventually become the Tobacco Control Act 2014.

“An individual who run foul of the provision, like smoking at areas that are designated non-smoking, will be given option of fine of up to N50,000 or combine it with imprisonment of up to six months.’’

The minister said that “for companies, the fine varies from N1 million to as much as N5 million; imprisonment of the chief executives of those companies could vary from one year to two years when they run foul of the law.’’

He said places which would cover land, rail, sea and air transportations, would be clearly classified as non-smoking areas “and anyone who goes against it will be prosecuted.

“Advertisement is totally banned under this law. You cannot advertise tobacco product in any media under the law. Any form of advertisement is not permitted, either in broadcast media, outdoor, print, ward-to-ward and any form of advertisement is totally banned.

“The Bill is also looking at packaging. 50 per cent of the packaging will be to warn people about the dangerous effect of tobacco.
“Smuggling of the product to the country is also covered by the Bill.’’

He said the Bill also proposes to ban any form of corporate sponsorship by any tobacco company of any public event such as sports, seminar and so on, stressing that “we will not accept gifts from any tobacco company. Gifts such as school building etc will not be taken.’’

The minister added that the Bill also proposes the setting up of a national committee that will monitor its implementation and ensure judicious use of the fund.

He said:
“I am not against Anointing Oil. The thing is, it’s a Jewish Culture. They rub it on their bodies as protection against insects like your mosquito repellents. It was used extensively in the old testament for anointing …It is the power of God that heals, not the Oil”.
Pastor Bakare is a former Vice Presidential candidate under the Congress for Progressive Change and Convener of the Save Nigeria Group (SNG).

The mythical-looking creature, believed to be a checkered keelback, was spotted crawling past a house in Burdwan, West Bengal, but made a quick getaway just after it was snapped by local Apurba Ghosh.
He revealed: "It happened at the blink of an eye.
The snake came across and was gliding along the surface.
I only managed to take shots with my phone. It was all gone within seconds."
The slithery serpent, which is not venomous, then slinked away into the nearby bushes before it could be caught.
The village of Burdwan is home to a whole host of snakes – including the mighty King Cobra.
Ghosh added: "Snakes are sighted here very often because of close proximity to the forests. But they don't attack humans.
Some animals, mostly dogs and other pets, are bitten once in a while.
Some villagers also worship these snakes because they are regarded as highly auspicious in the Hindu religion."
Two-headed snakes have been seen on several occasions over the years, although most only live for a few months.
